Parmarth Niketan is the headquarters of the Swami Shukdevanand Trust, a non-profit, religious/spiritual organization dedicated to religion, spirituality and culture. The trust was founded in 1942 by the great saint Pujya Swami Shukdevanandji Maharaj (1901- 1965) and registered in 1962 under the Societies Registration Act.


The objectives of the Trust are as follows:


 •To promote and offer religious and spiritual teachings for the development of spiritual values and character - without any prejudice

 •To alleviate or mitigate human suffering, both mental and physical through religion and spirituality

 •To fulfill or assist in the fulfillment of any other charitable and/or spiritual objective which will benefit the general public

 •To protect, preserve and disseminate the teachings of Indian culture and heritage

In 1945 at the age of nine, Pujya Swami Asanganandji Maharaj came to Parmarth Niketan under the guidance and as a disciple of Swami Shukdevanandji Maharaj. For the past sixty-one years, He has been devotedly serving the ashram.


He has obtained acharya degrees in Vedanta and Sanskrit literature, as well as a Master's degree in Sanskrit literature. Since 1961, He has tirelessly served the ashram's Sanskrit Vidyalaya. Though very learned, His simplicity and humbleness is manifested in the countless number of hours performing the simplest of tasks.


In 1977, He renounced worldly attachments and took sanyasa from Swami Shukdevanandji Maharaj.


From 1991 to 2006, He has served the Swami Shukdevanand Trust, first as Managing Trustee from 1991 -2006 and now as Chairman since 2006, gracing all of the projects with His devotion and piety.


Pujya Swami Asanganandji Maharaj has been imparting the wisdom of the ancient holy scriptures including yoga to countless number of devotees. His wisdom has brought inspiration, upliftment and deep knowledge to pilgrims who seek His guidance.


Swami Chinmayanand Saraswatiji Maharaj


Managing Trustee, Swami Shukdevanand Trust

H.H. Swami Chinmayanand Saraswatiji Maharaj was born on 3rd March 1947 in a Royal family of Eastern U.P. He left his home in 1967 at a young age of twenty years old. From 1967 to 1971 he was dedicated to Gayatri and Tantra in Haridwar, Varanasi and Guwahati, and completed his M.A. (Philosophy) and Doctorate (Comparative study of Shankar and Arvinda). Finally he took Sanyas in 1971 from H. H. Swami Dharmananda Saraswatiji Maharaj. He served as a Member of Parliament from 1991 and then later in 1998 and 1999. During this time he served on several reputed Parliamentary Committees like:


Public Accounts Committee, Estimate Committee, Assurance Committee, Member Salary and Accounts Committee, Civil Aviation Committee, Rural and Urban Development Committee, Telecommunication Committee, Central Education Board, Central Sanskrit Board, among others.

In addition to his Parliamentary activities he has held important positions in many of the social and political organizations also, including World Congress of Faith and Culture, BJP National Council, Parliamentary group of India etc. Further, he served as Minister for Home (State) in Government of India. He was the first sanyasi to serve in the home ministry. During this time he made more than 2600 militant Bodos surrender successfully in the presence of Deputy PM, Governor of Assam, and CM of Assam and helped bring peace in the North-East, for which he received a World Peace Award. Apart from this he has narrated several books and edited many magazines. He has been a frequent writer in National Dailies also.
